With over $3 billion in capital under management, 20 partner companies and 36 fully realized investments since 1994, Birch Hill is the leader in long-term value creation in the Canadian mid-market. As a group, Birch Hill’s partner companies represent one of Canada’s largest corporate entities with over $6 billion in total revenue and more than 34,000 employees.

Mid-market focus:

We work with companies valued in the C$30 million to C$600 million range.

Emphasis on growth:

Our focus is on growth oriented businesses across most industries. We do not invest in real estate, pure commodity companies or start ups.
Team with depth and diversity
Our 20 professional staff provide the bench strength and skills to allow us to take on complex and sustained investment partnerships.

Constructive ownership model:

We are dedicated to principles of fairness, honesty and open collaboration in all of our relationships.
Impressive track record

The Birch Hill team has achieved superior and consistent returns including an 18 percent cumulative average rate of EBITDA growth on actively employed capital since 1995. This record of success led to Birch Hill closing its fifth private equity fund, Birch Hill Equity Partners V, LP at the end of 2015. This fund was capped at $1.3 billion, exceeding its original target of $1 billion due to strong interest from both existing and new investors.

Strategy

Birch Hill invests in companies that have the opportunity to improve their financial performance and enhance their strategic position. We work with senior management as an active partner to create real, long-term value. We have a strong value discipline when acquiring new investments and capitalize companies conservatively to allow them to take the right risks on the path to growth.

Our investment strategy begins long before we take a position in a partner company and extends for the full life of our relationship, by:

Recognizing Value

• Focus on industries with solid fundamentals and dominant companies with growth potential
• Apply deep diligence plan
• Continuously challenge the case to invest

Structuring Value

• Balance risk and efficiency in the tax and financing structure
Building Value
• Work with management on the strategic agenda
• Drive growth and profitability
• Undertake regular progress review and risk assessment

Realizing Value

• Maintain a disciplined, patient approach to identifying opportunities
